SYDNEY (BNS): The Australian Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) has signed a $8.7 million contract with Thales Australia for the scheduled repair and maintenance of HMAS Newcastle.

According to Australian MoD, this is further evidence of Defence’s commitment to ensuring the on-going repair and maintenance of Navy ships occurs in Australia.

Australian defence has budgeted to spend approximately $79 million on ship repair and maintenance in the Sydney region in 2010 and $81 million in 2011.

The contract is part of the planned expenditure.

Recently, Defence Materiel Organisation has announced to spend $12 to $17 million for the HMA Ships Kanimbla and Manoora in the Sydney region over the coming months.
