Russia, Norway to hold naval drill in June

MOSCOW (BNS): Russia and Norway will hold joint naval exercise in the Barents and Norwegian seas next month.

The Russian Navy will send its Northern fleet’s large ASW ship Severomorsk, Il-38 ASW aircraft, Su-33 fighters, and Ka-27PS helicopter to take part in the five-day long naval drill which will kick start on June 7.

From the Norwegian side, the frigate KNM Otto Sverdrup, Coast Guard ship Nordkapp, Orion patrol aircraft, F-16 fighters and Lynx helicopters will participate in the exercise named ‘Pomor-2010,’ RIA Novosti reported quoting a Russian Navy statement.

The two countries will practice gun firings at aerial and sea surface targets, detection and attack of a submarine, release of a captured vessel from pirates, joint maneuvering and deck landing of helicopters, a spokesman of the Northern Fleet said.
