ISRO successfully launches EOS-05 Earth observation satellite

The GSLV-F17 rocket has successfully accomplished its mission, placing the EOS-05 satellite into the sub-geosynchronous transfer orbit, ISRO has said.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday successfully launched an Earth observation satellite, EOS-05, carried by the GSLV-F17 rocket, from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

“The GSLV-F17 vehicle has placed EOS-05 satellite into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub- GTO). 

“EOS-05 is a state-of-the-art Earth observation spacecraft. It is India’s first ever imaging satellite from Geosynchronous orbit,” ISRO said in a statement.  

The three stage GSLV-F17 is the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The launch vehicle has a height of 51.7 meter and a lift-off mass of 420.5 tonne.

The launch vehicle has carried a payload mass of ~2367 kg, ISRO said. 

Conratulating ISRO on the "outstanding achievement", Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the successful launch is a reflection of "excellence, innovation and growing capabilities" that define India’s space sector. 

"Yet another outstanding achievement by ISRO and a proud moment for our nation.

"The successful launch of GSLV-F17 carrying EOS-05, India’s first-ever imaging satellite from Geosynchronous orbit is a reflection of the excellence, innovation and growing capabilities that define India’s space sector.  

"The growing partnership between ISRO and Indian industry is adding new strength and scale to our space programme and expanding India’s capabilities across the entire space ecosystem," PM Modi said in a message on X. 

Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh said the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite would enable advanced imaging across visible, infrared, multi-spectral and hyperspectral bands.
