Indian Navy Takes delivery of first indigenous multi-purpose vessel ‘Samarthak’

The Indian Navy on Thursday took delivery of ‘Samarthak’, the first indigenously developed Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd. (L&T).
With more than 75 per cent indigenous content, the vessel has been designed to undertake a wide range of missions, including maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, offshore patrolling, and support for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, the Defence Ministry said.
The vessel’s name, Samarthak, meaning ‘the Proponent’, reflects its intended role as a dependable enabler of diverse maritime missions. Designed as a versatile platform rather than for a single specialised task, the MPV can support a broad spectrum of operational requirements.
The delivery of Samarthak marks another significant milestone in the Indian Navy’s ongoing indigenous shipbuilding programme and reinforces the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
The vessel also underscores India’s growing capabilities in indigenous warship and naval vessel construction and its continued efforts towards establishing a self-reliant domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
