Indigenous stealth frigate 'Dunagiri', power packed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensor suites and engineered for sustained operations, is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy this month, it is learnt.

Besides, indigenous Anti-submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft 'Agray' and Survey Vessel (Large) ship 'Sanshodhak' are also set to be commissioned soon into the Navy, boosting India's naval prowess.

The Navy on Wednesday posted on X a video about 'Dunagiri', the fifth ship of Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) frigates, underlining India's warship design and construction capabilities.

“Witness the engineering marvel behind Dunagiri, the fifth Project 17A stealth frigate, designed by the Indian Navy and built by @OfficialGRSE. Every weld, every block and every milestone showcases the pinnacle of indigenous engineering and ship building excellence,” the Navy said in the post.

'Dunagiri', the second of these frigates built at the Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers Ltd (GRSE), was delivered to the Navy on March 30 at GRSE Kolkata.

While there is no official word on it yet, it is learnt that the frigate is expected to be inducted into the Indian Navy soon.

Ahead of the commissioning, the Navy posted a video on YouTube on Tuesday with the tagline 'Dunagiri: Ready For Commission'.

“Precision. Power. Agility. Power packed with state-of-art weapon and sensor suites, engineered for long sea legs, sustained operations and equipped with indigenous stealth technology, Dunagiri is built for multi-dimensional dominance and lethality. Dunagiri: Decisive Dauntless Dominant,” it said in the caption.

The video also features a recorded message from Captain Diwya Alok, Commanding Officer (designate) of the ship, who says, “As we join the Eastern Fleet and the Eastern Naval Command, we do so with a promise, a promise of resolve, reach and readiness."

In a post on X on June 11, the Navy unveiled the crest of 'Dunagiri', a name that carries forward the legacy of the former INS Dunagiri (F-36), which served the nation with distinction from May 1977 until October 2010, and earned a proud place in the annals of the Indian Navy.

Featuring the Osprey taking flight from a mountain peak, the crest symbolises the “valiant spirit of a combatant to soar, swoop and strike in all three dimensions”.

With its motto 'Victory is my Profession', Dunagiri will strengthen the Navy's combat capability and serve as a "potent force multiplier" in safeguarding India's maritime interests, the force said in the post.

The new 'Dunagiri' carries forward a legacy of dedication, courage and operational excellence. Blending the spirit of her predecessor with cutting-edge indigenous technology, "she represents a new era of maritime power for India".

From heritage to horizon, 'Dunagiri' stands ready to safeguard the nation's maritime interests and uphold the proud traditions of the Navy, the force earlier said.

INS Taragiri, the fourth potent platform of the Project 17A class endowed with cutting-edge weapon suite, including supersonic cruise missiles, was commissioned into the Navy in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on April 3.

Designed by the Warship Design Bureau and overseen by the Warship Overseeing Team (Mumbai), P17A frigates reflect a "generational leap" in indigenous ship design, stealth, survivability and combat capability.

P17A ships are fitted with an advanced weapon and sensor suite as compared to the P17 (Shivalik-class).

INS Nilgiri, the lead ship of P17A frigates, was commissioned on January 15, 2025.

INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri were commissioned into the Navy on August 26, 2025.

It was the first time that two frontline surface combatants indigenously constructed by two different shipyards – Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDSL), Mumbai (INS Udaygiri), and GRSE Kolkata (INS Himgiri) – were commissioned simultaneously.

Mahendragiri, the fourth Project 17A stealth frigate, was delivered to the Navy on April 30 at the MDSL in Mumbai.

"Dunagiri, Sanshodhak and Agray will be commissioned soon into the Indian Navy, marking a significant milestone in the nation's maritime journey.

“Together, these ships strengthen the Navy's capabilities across warfare, hydrography and maritime security, highlighting its commitment to safeguarding the nation's interests at sea,” the Navy posted on its Instagram handle earlier.
