Russia's RS-24 to replace Topol-M ICBM missiles

MOSCOW (BNS): Russia to rearm its missile forces with multiple-warhead RS-24 missiles.

According to a RIA Novosti news report, Russia will soon rearm its Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) with RS-24 missiles instead of the RS-12M Topol-M (SS-27 Sickle) mobile intercontinental ballistic missile systems (ICBM).

"The RS-24 ballistic missile system is an advanced version of the Topol-M and is a reliable weapon," SMF Commander Lt. Gen. Sergei Karakayev, was quoted as saying in the news report.

He also added that, in future Topol-M mobile missile system will not be supplied to the Strategic Missile Forces.

The RS-24 is a new-generation intercontinental ballistic missile, which is equipped with a multiple independently targetable reentry vehicle (MIRV) warhead. It is expected to greatly strengthen the Strategic Missile Forces (SMF) strike capability.
