Russia to upgrade two Indian navy submarines

MOSCOW (BNS): India has asked Russia to upgrade two of its submarines, according to Igor Vilnit, Director-General, Rubin Central Maritime Design Bureau.

The Indian government has filed a request to the Russian Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation to extend the life of two Russian Kilo Class submarines (Type 877EKM), a RIA Novosti report quoting him said.

The report said specialists from the Zvyozdochka ship repair centre and the Rubin design bureau will leave for India to inspect the first submarine.

India and Russia have signed an interstate agreement on military-technical cooperation. The Indian navy has received ten submarines from 1986 to 2000, it added.
