SEVERODVINSK (BNS): Russia's defence shipyard Sevmash has laid down three new submarines - the Knyaz Oleg (Borei project), the Krasnoyarsk (Yasen project) and the Khabarovsk, a news report said.
The Knyaz Oleg is the fifth nuclear - powered submarine to be built under the Borei project and the first series submarine of the modernised 955A project while the multipurpose nuclear submarine Krasnoyarsk will be the fourth 885M Yasen class vessel, an Itar-Tass report said.
The submarines were laid down as part of the celebrations of the Russian Navy Day on 27 July.
"The Navy's combat readiness and mobility will grow, its material and technical facilities will be built up, the coastal infrastructure will be modernised. New ships will be built," the report quoted President Vladimir Putin as saying.
The Knyaz Oleg and the Krasnoyarsk will be the backbone of the Russian Navy in the next decade, Russian Deputy Defence Minister, Yuri Borisov, who was present at the ceremony, said.
"I think that these ships in the coming decades will form the basis of the Navy and are guaranteed to provide the defence capability and the security of our country," a RIA Novosti report quoting him said.
The Russian Navy has in its possession 60 submarines - about 10 of which are nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, more than 30 multipurpose nuclear sumbmarines, and others diesel and special purpose vessels, the report said.
