Indian firm inks MoU with German company to produce military vehicles

The two firms have signed the MoU during the IDEX in Abu Dhabi.

ABU DHABI (BNS): The defence subsidiary of Indian private firm Ashok Leyland has joined hands with the Munich-based Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) to develop and produce advanced defence systems for the Indian and international markets.

The two entities signed a MoU during the ongoing International Defence Exhibition (IDEX) at Abu Dhabi Tuesday.

“The scope of the co-operation will initially include the development of armoured wheeled vehicles, recovery vehicles, artillery and combat systems, bridge laying systems and other similar products,” the Indian firm said in a statement.

Ashok Leyland is the leading supplier of military trucks to the Indian Army with over 60,000 of its Stallion vehicles forming the Army’s veritable logistics backbone.

Ashok Leyland Defence Systems, the newly-formed defence subsidiary of the company, will use this expertise and experience of designing and developing such defence vehicles for its new alliance with the German firm.

KMW will provide the technology and technical assistance that will be required for the development of these defence systems, the statement said.
