HELSINKI (BNS): The Finnish Border Guard (FBG) has signed a contract with Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) to improve the maritime surveillance capacity of its two Dornier aircraft.

Under the contract, an advanced search radar and infrared camera will be integrated with the existing MSS 6000 maritime surveillance system.

The aircraft are used for maritime patrol missions over the Baltic Sea such as border patrol, ship traffic monitoring, monitoring of oil spills and support to search and rescue operations.

MSS 6000 systems have been installed on several aircraft types and are used by coast guard organisations in countries around the world. The system uses state-of-the art technology and is designed to be an integral part of today's multi-faceted maritime surveillance mission.

The two Dornier aircraft will be upgraded with the new system by 2011 and 2012.
