US Navy awards modification contract for Zumwalt class ships
The construction of all the three destroyer of Zumwalt class (DDG 1000) will be done in the several facility centers of General Dynamics.
The new order is an extension of a previously awarded contract by US Navy.
“This award will allow us to maintain progress on our DDG 1001 start-up and initiate timely procurement of key long-lead material items to support the DDG 1002 construction schedule,†Jeff Geiger, president of Bath Iron Works, said in a company news release.
Work encompassed by this modification is expected to be completed by February 2011.
Since 1991, Bath Iron Works has manufactured and delivered 32-Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) class destroyers to the US Navy. Currently, two additional ships are under construction for delivery in 2011.
