SAN DIEGO (BNS): The US Navy has recently awarded a $37 million contract to General Dynamics NASSCO for the fitting-out availability of the San Antonio-class amphibious assault dock ship USS San Diego (LPD 22).

General Dynamics NASSCO, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.

Under the contract, the company will perform programme management, planning, engineering, design, liaison, scheduling, labour and procurement of incidental material.

On board repair efforts will include piping, structural and machinery work. The contract award also includes options which, if exercised, would bring the total value of this contract to approximately $134 million, according to a news release by the General Dynamics.

Work under this contract will be performed at NASSCO beginning in May 2012 and is expected to be completed by December 2014.

Built in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the 684-foot long ship completed builder's sea trials off the Gulf Coast on October 1, 2011. The tests assessed the ship's defensive, communications, propulsion and other auxiliary systems.

The USS San Diego is designed to deliver a Marine battalion of 699 officers and enlisted men fully equipped for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions.

USS San Diego, a San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock, is the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for San Diego, California.
