ANKARA (BNS): Turkish defence major ASELSAN has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with European engine maker Eurojet to collaborate in the EJ200 military turbofan engine programme.

The deal, inked on January 20, is intended to pave the way for further discussions to explore potential opportunities for business collaboration on Engine Control Units, Health and Usage Monitoring System and software developments projects relating to the EJ200 engine programme.

The intended collaboration is primarily based on the EJ200 engine, which is currently employed on the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet and may find application in the Turkish TFX programme, ASELSAN said.

The two companies have also agreed to explore further opportunities targeting the global market.

Turkey announced the TFX programme in 2010 under which it intends to design, develop and produce an indigenous next-generation air superiority fighter jet. The combat plane will be developed by the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with technical assistance from Sweden's SAAB.

The first prototype of the new warplane is planned to be produced by 2023.
