SINGAPORE (BNS): The navies of Singapore and Brunei have concluded a four-day long bilateral maritime exercise.

The 31st edition of Exercise Pelican 2011, hosted by Brunei, concluded on Wednesday.

It involved the Republic of Singapore Navy’s Formidable-class stealth frigate RSS Stalwart.

The Royal Brunei Navy participated in the drill with its newly-inducted Darussalam-class offshore patrol vessel KDB Darulehsan and two Ijhtihad-class fast patrol boats, KDB Syafaat and KDB Ijhtihad.

Brunei had received three Darussalam-class OPVs from Germany in January this year and four Ijhtihad-class fast patrol boats in 2010.

Exercise Pelican 2011 was the 31st in this series of bilateral exercises held between the navies of Singapore and Brunei since 1979.

The exercise underscores the excellent defence ties between Republic of Singapore Navy and Royal Brunei Navy.

The two navies also engage in a wide range of bilateral exercises and professional exchanges, which have enhanced the professionalism and strengthened the excellent ties between them, the Singapore defence ministry said.
