STOCKHOLM (BNS): Swedish Shipyard Kockums AB has given a $12 million (MSEK 100) contract to Defence and security company Saab, for providing overall design of the combat management system as well as solutions for integrating the system and subsystems aboard next-generation submarines.

The new contract is in addition to the contract recently signed between the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and Kockums, for the overall design of Sweden's next-generation submarines.

"Saab has world leading expertise within the area of naval command and control systems and our strategic cooperation with Kockums is very important for us. We look forward to being part of the development of Sweden's next generation of submarines," Gunilla Fransson, Head of business area Security and Defence Solutions within Saab, said in the company news release.

The next generation of submarines symbolise new developments in underwater technology in this field. The submarines are equipped to face current and future threats.

The next generation submarines will also have an improved intelligence gathering and stealth technology.
