Russian Navy's new Yasen-class submarine enter service

MOSCOW (BNS): Russian Navy's new-generation nuclear submarine (Project 885 Yasen-class) has recently entered the country's naval fleet after a flag-raising ceremony aboard the vessel moored near the Sevmash nuclear submarine shipyard in Severodvinsk.

The event was attended by Navy Commander Admiral Victor Chirkov, Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Vladimir Korolev, and senior officials from builder Sevmash and designer Malachite Central Design Bureau.

Russia's first Project 885M Yasen-class attack submarine, the Severodvinsk, submerged displacement of 13,800 tons, length of 119 meters, speed of 31 knots, and can dive to 600 meters. It has a crew of 90 including 32 officers, according to a news report by RIA Novosti.

Its main armament consists of 24 Oniks (SS-N-26) and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missiles, self-guided torpedoes and mines.
