Russian Navy inducts new attack submarine

MOSCOW (BNS): Russian Navy has inducted the new Yasen-class submarine, the Severodvinsk, in its naval fleet.

The Project 885M class attack submarine had been under construction at Sevmash Shipyard, according to a news report by RIA Novosti.

The Russian Navy has ordered a total of eight Yasen-class attack submarines. The second sub, Kazan and the third one, Novosibirsk, are still under construction.

The Severodvinsk, with a submerged displacement of 13,800 tonnes and speed of 31 kinots can carry of 24 Oniks (SS-N-26) and Kalibr (SS-N-27) cruise missiles, self-guided torpedoes and mines.

The submarine has a crew of about 90, suggesting a high degree of automation in the submarine's different systems.
