Russian Army Chief visits S Korea to firm up defence ties


SEOUL (BNS): In order to further firm up bilateral defence ties, South Korea and Russia are considering exchange of more military personnel, aircraft and warships among them.

Russian Army Chief Nikolai Makarov who arrived in Seoul on Sunday for a three-day visit, held discussions with his Korean counterpart, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) Chairman Han Min-koo.

The two sides discussed boosting exchanges of military personnel, aircraft and warships, the JCS said in a statement as quoted by the Yonhap news agency.

The Army Chiefs of the two countries also shared views on security conditions on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, the statement said.

The Russian Army Chief also plans to meet South Korean Defence Minister Kim Tae-young during his visit.

Russia and South Korea are engaged in bilateral defence ties since 1990s.
