MOSCOW (BNS): Russia plans to test new radar being built near the Baltic port of Kaliningrad by the end of this year, Space Force Commander Gen. Oleg Ostapenko has said.

The westernmost radar ‘Voronezh-DM’ in the Kaliningrad Region is likely to be tested by the end of this year. The first two Voronezh class radars are being tested near St. Petersburg and near Krasnodar, a Ria Novosti report quoting Ostapenko said.

According the report, three more radars would soon be completed near the cities of Irkutsk in Siberia, St. Petersburg and Krasnodar in the south. The radar in Lekhtusi outside St. Petersburg is ready and will be put on combat duty by the end of 2011.

The Voronezh class radar has a range of 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles). It uses less energy and is more environmentally friendly than its predecessors, the Dnepr and Daryal, it said.
