Russia to spend $665 bln on arms modernisation

MOSCOW (BNS): Russian Defence Ministry has planned to spend over 19 trillion rubles ($665 billion) for the state arms procurement programme, a media report said.

“The Defence Ministry will buy 36 strategic ballistic missiles, two strategic missile submarines and 20 strategic cruise missiles this year,” RIA Novosti quoted Russian Minister Anatoly Serdyukov as saying.

The budget will also cover 5 spacecraft, 35 warplanes, 109 helicopters, 21 missile defence systems, 3 multirole nuclear powered submarines and a surface warship, it said.

According to the media reports, the defence ministry has already submitted a $640.7bn arms procurement plan for 2011-2020 to the government.
