MOSCOW (BNS): Russia is planning to start large-scale production of new generation S-500 surface-to-air missile system by 2016.

"Russia's Almaz-Antei design bureau is working to complete the development of the S-500 system by 2015-2016," the company's deputy general director Yury Solovyev, was quoted as saying in a news report by RIA Novosti.

The S-500 is expected to have an extended range of up to 600 km (over 370 miles) and simultaneously engage up to 10 targets, the news report added.

The S-500 is a new generation surface-to-air missile system, designed for intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles and for defense against Airborne Early Warning and Control, Airborne Warning and Control System, and jamming aircraft.

The missile system is expected that the S-500 will outperform the S-400 and the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 system.
