Russia to build two Tiger class corvettes for Algeria

The Tiger-class corvette is the export variant of the Steregushchy stealth corvettes Russia is building for its navy.

ST PETERSBURG (BNS): Russia has bagged a deal to build two Project 20382 Tiger-class corvettes for the Algerian Navy.

The deal was signed during the ongoing International Maritime Defence Show (IMDS-2011) at St. Petersburg, Russia, Ria Novosti reported.

Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation and state arms exporter Rosoboronexport inked the deal with the African customer to build the new warships for its navy.

“We have signed two agreements together with Rosoboronexport to sell two corvettes to Algeria and three light (Molniya missile) corvettes to a former Soviet republic,” Roman Trotsenko, head of the shipbuilding corporation, was quoted as saying by the news agency.

The total contracts amount signed during the biennial naval exhibition was worth $1.3 billion and more contracts were expected before the show closes on July 3, the official said.

Russian Navy is displaying 15 of its combat ships, including submarines and frigates, during the event that began on Wednesday. The Navy’s new stealth corvette, Soobrazitelny under Project 20380, is also making its first public appearance at the show.

The Project 20382 Tiger is the export variant of the Project 20380 Steregushchy class corvettes that Russia is building for its navy. The combat ship can be deployed in the near sea zone against ships and submarines, for supporting landing troops, and against air targets.
