ARKHANGELSK (BNS): Russia will soon begin the final sea trials of the first strategic nuclear-powered fourth generation submarine, the Yuri Dolgoruki, a media report said.

Russian Shipyard Sevmash had already completed the programme of shipyards trials in April 2007. The construction of the Yuri Dolgoruki of Project 955 ‘Borei’ started in 1996.

The fourth generation submarine is planned to put into service together with the new naval-based Bulava missile, which is also under trials.

In December 2010, Russia had already launched the first serial submarine of Project 955, the Alexander Nevsky at Sevmash. Construction of another submarine of the project, the Vladimir Monomakh is still under going at Sevmash.

The first Borey class sub is scheduled to enter service with the Russian Navy in the first half of this year while the second submarine of the class, Alexander Nevskiy, is expected to be commissioned in December 2011 in the Russian Pacific Fleet, the earlier reports said.

According to Itar-Tass, the Russian Defence Ministry plans to build no less than eight Borei submarines, which are bound to become the foundation of the naval strategic nuclear forces of Russia in the 21st century.
