Raytheon to develop airborne launcher TOW

PARIS (BNS): Raytheon will design and develop an airborne launcher for radio frequency guided TOW (tube-launched, optically-tracked, wireless-guided) missiles.

The TOW weapon system features a family of multi mission missiles fired from a variety of ground and helicopter platforms.

"The upgrade package with the TOW launcher will be initially available to Cobra helicopter users," Ike Song, vice president of Situational Awareness Systems for Northrop Grumman's Woodland Hills, California-based Navigation Systems division, said in a company news release.

"Because TOW is the guided missile system of choice for many airborne users, an integrated and modernised TOW fire control system will complement our state-of-the-art integrated avionics by offering an enhanced heavy assault capability,� he added.

TOW missile gives a significant advantage to war-fighters if it is launched from a helicopter, as it allows the pursuit of opponent in hard-to-reach areas like mountains. Once located, targets can be engaged at a safe distance and from a variety of vantage points.

The new TOW airborne system will be integrated into Northrop Grumman Corporation's proven suite of glass cockpit upgrades.
