LONDON (BNS): The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded Raytheon a replenishment contract for Paveway IV as part of a 60 million pound contract.

Paveway IV - the latest generation GPS precision-guided munition - is among the most advanced precision bombs and considered the backbone of the RAF's bombing capability.

The weapon is fitted with Global Positioning System (GPS) technology and laser guidance systems which means that the precision delivery of the capability is unaffected by clouds or smoke screens.

Paveway IV was first introduced to operations in 2008 and plans are in hand to fit it to the RAF's Typhoon combat aircraft in 2013.
