TEWKSBURY (BNS): US defence contractor Raytheon has received a contract from Oman to provide the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) to its military.

The contract, worth $1.28 billion, includes ground support equipment, a full training package, and technical assistance, the company announced on Jan. 23.

The contract, awarded in the fourth quarter of 2013, was announced in Oman at a signing ceremony attended by officials from both the countries.

Raytheon, along with its long term partner KONGSBERG, will supply the system to The Sultanate of Oman, it said.

The NASMAS is a state-of-the-art network-centric air defence system consisting of the US-made AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles and AN/MPQ-64 Sentinel 3D radars. The surface-to-air missile system also includes sensors, command and control and communications equipment along with missile launchers.

As part of Raytheon's integrated air and Missile defence portfolio, NASAMS works seamlessly with the Patriot Air and Missile Defence System and the Hawk Air Defence system.

Oman becomes the seventh customer of the NASAMS which is already in use in the US, Norway, the Netherlands, Spain, Finland and another country not named by the company.
