PARIS (BNS): The second type Skjold corvettes have been delivered to the Royal Norwegian Navy.
The corvettes are built specifically to ensure safety in coastal areas and for use in international naval operations like NATO.
The vessel’s size is less than fifty meters and is heavily armed. It can carry eight missiles sea-sea and a cannon of 76 mm capable of engaging multiple targets simultaneously to a range greater than 12 km.
The validation of the combat system was acquired after a final campaign implementation decoy launchers and cannon held in the Bergen area last August, a DCNS release said.
The first class corvette Skjold, the P961-STORM, was delivered in September and the second series, the P962-SKUDD in October. The company plans to deliver the other four programs before the end of 2011.
The Skjold corvettes are designed and produced by DCNS along with two Norwegian industries- shipyard Umoe Mandal and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace.
