New short-range air defence system for Russia by 2015

MOSCOW (BNS): The Russian military will be equipped with the new Morfey short-range air defence systeby 2015, Russian Deputy Defence Minister Col. Gen. Oleg Ostapenko has said.

A Ria Novosti report quoting Ostapenko said, the first few systems will be put in service sometime in 2015.

Morfey is a mobile air defence system with an effective range of five kilometres. It has been in development since 2007.

The Morfey will complement the Vityaz, the S-400 and the S-500 air defence systems in the future aerospace defence network to engage targets at ranges from five to 400 kilometers, and at altitudes from five metres to near space, it added.

The medium-range Vityaz air defence system, which is due to replace the outdated S-300PS system, is still under development, the report said.
