Navies of India, Singapore discuss strengthening ties

NEW DELHI (PTI): Navies of India and Singapore have discussed ways of further strengthening their ties during a meeting between Indian Navy chief Admiral Robin Dhowan and his Singaporean counterpart Rear Admiral Ng Chee Peng.

"Visit of Singapore Naval Chief is expected to intensify the cooperation between both navies and strengthen historical ties between both navies. Incidentally, 2014-15 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Singapore," a Navy release said.

It said the interaction between the armed forces of the two countries has been historic since both countries operated together in various campaigns during the Second World War.

Presently, Singapore has a Defence Cooperation Agreement besides a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement with India.

The two Chiefs also discussed issues of cooperation between both navies and regional maritime security.

Peng also met Army Chief Gen. Bikram Singh and would also be interacting with IAF Chief Arup Raha and the Defence Secretary.
