Naval history book released by President of India

NEW DELHI (BNS): A book on naval history titled 'Transition to Guardianship' was released by President Pratibha Patil here on Saturday. The book was compiled by late Vice Admiral G M Hiranandani.

President Patil released the book during the 'at Home' event at Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma's residence here to mark Navy Day.

The book deals with the navy's strides from 1990 to 2000. During this time the navy had increased its might and thus spread its wings from the shores of Africa in the west to the continent of Australia in the east.

The new book is the third in the trilogy series on Indian Naval history.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister A K Antony, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Leader of the Opposition L K Advani and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi were present there to mark the occassion

French Defence Minister Harve Morin and US Pacific Commander Admiral Robert F Willard were also present.

India on Sunday carried out a successful trial of a laser-directed energy weapon system, joining a select group of nations having the new-age armament used to bring down hostile drones and unmanned aircraft.
