NEW DELHI (BNS): Indigenous anti-tank missile Nag was successfully test-fired at the firing ranges in Pokhran on Thursday.
DRDO sources said this is the first of a series of winter trials for the anti-tank missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
The missile carried a live warhead and hit the stationary target at about 3300 meters away, as was planned. The missile was launched from its carrier, Namica.
The armour of the target, an old tank, was shattered as expected, DRDO sources said.
Over the next few weeks, the Army will carry out a series of tests of Nag, to be followed by summer trials. “It is part of the final user trials,” a DRDO official said. The next tests of Nag will be between December 28 and 30, when two moving and three fixed targets would be engaged.
Nag is a top-attack missile with a range of up to 7 kilometers. It carries an eight-kilogram warhead which can pierce modern armours including both explosive reactive and composite armours. It has both day and night firing capability and weighs a little over 40 kilograms.
