COLOMBO (PTI): A Russian-built MiG-27 fighter jet of Sri Lankan Air Force Monday crashed during a training exercise but there was no casualty.

The aircraft crashed near Dummalasuriya in the North Western Province. There were no casualties from the crash as the pilot ejected before impact, an air force spokesperson said.

Engine failure was cited as the reason for the crash.

The Russian built MiG 27 along with Israeli built Kfir aircraft played a leading role in Sri Lanka's battle against the rebel Tamil Tigers.

Nearly three decades-long civil war in Sri Lanka ended in May 2009 after government troops crushed the LTTE.
