KUALA LUMPUR (BNS): Malaysian satellite operator MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd. is planning to acquire two commercial communications satellites from US defence and space company Boeing.

Boeing has submitted a Request for Proposal (RFP) to supply the satellites to MEASAT, a top company official, who was in Malaysia, has said.

“We are in the middle of the competitive process to supply a MEASAT satellite as they are seeking high bandwidth to increase their commercial communications capacity,” Dennis Muilenburg, Presedent & CEO of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

MEASAT “is in the process of acquiring an additional satellite, potentially two,” the official said.

Boeing has delivered three of the four MEASAT (Malaysia East Asia Satellite) systems already launched and operated by the satellite operator.

While the MEASAT-1 and MEASAT-2 were launched in 1996, MEASAT-3 was orbited in 2006.
