MANASSAS (BNS): The US Navy has awarded an $84 million contract to Lockheed Martin to provide sonar systems for its entire fleet of submarines.

Under the contract, Lockheed will develop, produce, support and modernise sonar systems of all active US Navy submarines, including initial system deliveries for the Virginia Class attack submarines presently under construction.

The contract will enable the fleet to maintain an acoustic advantage, Lockheed said.

The initial contract includes options which, if exercied, will bring the total contract value to $2.1 billion, the company said.
