MARIETTA (BNS): Lockheed Martin has rolled out the first MC-130J Combat Shadow II tanker transport aircraft designed for the US Air Force’s Special Operations Command.

The aircraft, an advanced version of the existing MC-130 family of transport planes, was rolled out at the company's Marietta facility in Georgia Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt. Gen. Donald C. Wurster, commander, Air Force Special Operations Command, said, "The MC-130J is one of the most versatile tactical airlifters in the world. Its multi-mission capabilities will increase the combat performance of special operations forces worldwide.”

He further added that the aircraft's advanced sensors, expanded avionics and universal aerial refueling capability would enable the highly skilled Airmen of AFSOC to operate under difficult conditions with unmatched speed and capability.

Lockheed is contracted to build 15 MC 130Js which will replace the USAF's aging fleet of MC 130s.

The US Air Force is authorised to acquire up to 20 MC-130Js against an approved requirement for 37.

Based on the KC-130J tanker aircraft used by the US Marine Corps, the new MC 130J features an electro-optical/infrared sensor, a combat systems operator station on its flight deck and provisions for the large aircraft infrared countermeasures system. The multi-role aircraft also has enhanced cargo handling system and a universal aerial refueling Receptacle slipway installation.

Lockheed expects to start delivering the first MC-130Js in August this year as the aircraft are scheduled to get Initial Operational Capability in 2012.
