Indian navy chief arrives in Lanka

COLOMBO (PTI): Chief of Naval Staff Admiral D K Joshi has arrived in Sri Lanka to attend an international maritime security meet.

He is scheduled to attend the 'Galle Dialogue 2013' to be held in the southern port city of Galle on Monday and Tuesday.

The international maritime security conference gets underway for the fourth consecutive year.

Local and foreign scholars and experts in maritime and naval affairs representing 35 countries are expected to share their views at this two-day dialogue held under the theme, 'Emerging Maritime Trends in the Indian Ocean'.

Admiral Joshi is due to present a paper on 'Emerging Maritime Interests in Asia Pacific: An Indian Perspective'.

Admiral Joshi's visit is also significant as it comes in the backdrop of a series of incidents involving fishermen of both countries.

India has said 77 of its fishermen are in Sri Lankan jails after being arrested by the Lankan navy.

The issue of Sri Lankan forces arresting Indian fishermen has been contentious with External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid taking up the matter with the Sri Lankan leadership during his visit here last month.
