Indian military exercise 'Ashwamedh' culminates

JALANDHAR (PTI): Ashwamedh, the annual military exercise of the Vajra Corps, has ended in areas around Jalandhar after a period of four days.

"We have achieved the aim for which we started 'Ashwamedh.' All the wings have displayed sound war skills," General Officer Commanding, Lt Gen Sanjeev Madhok, said.

"The participating soldiers performed very well, which is worth mentioning. I am satisfied with the defence preparations," he said.

12,000 soldiers and 200 tanks took part in the exercise in various areas of the western front, a defence spokesman said.

It included movement of formations to tactical battle area and launching an offensive, he said, adding that it saw "spectacular coordination" between the Army and the Air Force.

Troops from Air Defence, Special Forces, Engineering and Signals, Armoured and Artillery units were among those participating in 'Ashwamedh,' which started on May 27.

Vajra Corps, the defenders of Punjab, was raised at Ambala on March 1, 1950, and moved to Jalandhar in 1951. It has proved its mettle during the famous battles of Dograi and Khemkaran.
