YELAHANKA, BANGALORE (BNS): Indian Defence Minister A K Antony on Wednesday visited the BrahMos pavilion at Aero India, which is displaying  the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missile at the international event.

Distinguished Scientist and CEO and MD, BrahMos Aerospace, Dr. A S Pillai briefed the Defence Minister about the BRAHMOS missile system.

The Indian – Russian Joint Venture BrahMos Aerospace is exhibiting BRAHMOS air-launched version besides the land and naval variants of BRAHMOS which have been inducted in the Indian Army and Navy.

The mobile land-based configuration of BRAHMOS has achieved several advancements over the years in the form of Block I, Block II and Block III variants with each having its own distinct potentiality to hit and destroy enemy target.

The naval version of BRAHMOS, which has recently witnessed two successive successful test firings from Indian Navy warships, is also being showcased at the mega aerospace event.

During its test firing from INS Teg – the Navy’s newest Talwar-class guided missile frigate on Oct 7, 2012, BRAHMOS performed high-level manoeuvres, evaded detection by enemies' radars and completely destroyed a target ship at a distance of 290 kms.

In yet another successful test firing on January 9, 2013, BRAHMOS, after taking a “double-manoeuvre in S-form”, annihilated a designated target ship just one meter above the water line.

After arming the Indian Navy’s leading surface ships, BRAHMOS is now being developed for launch from submarines.

Another major futuristic technological advancement the company is highlighting during the aero-show is BRAHMOS II – the advanced hypersonic version of BRAHMOS.

At a time when researchers around the world are experimenting with hypersonic technology, development of BRAHMOS is one of the ambitious goals for BrahMos Aerospace.
