Indian Coast Guard ship commissioned

KOCHI (PTI): An Indian Coast Guard Ship, designed and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), was commissioned here Monday by Flag Officer, Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba.

The ship, 15th in the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessels, was commissioned in the presence of Additional Director General S P S Basra, Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard), and other senior dignitaries of the central and state governments including K K Meena, Joint Secretary in the Union Government and Muhammad Yasin, ADGP, Coastal security.

The ship has been named ICGS "Arinjay", meaning "Victory Over Evil", and will be based at Okha under the administrative and operational control of the commander, coast guard region (north west), a Navy press release said here.

The 50-metre indigenous FPV has a displacement of 290 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 33 knots with an endurance of 1500 nautical miles at economical speed of 13 knots.

Equipped with state-of-the-art weaponry and advanced communication and navigational equipment, it is designed for missions like surveillance, interdiction, search and rescue and medical evacuation.

In his address during the commissioning ceremony, Lanba dwelt upon the fast paced development of the Coast Guard and acknowledged its efforts to face the emerging security challenges in the maritime domain.

He reiterated that with increasing assets the Coast Guard has become a potent force in the Asian sub continent.

The Vice Admiral also thanked CSL for delivering the ship 69 days before schedule.

The ship is commanded by Commandant AK Mudgal and has complement of four officers and 31 enrolled personnel.
