Indian Army chief to visit forward areas in Arunachal Pradesh

NEW DELHI (PTI): Army Chief Gen. Dalbir Singh Suhag will visit forward bases along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Arunachal Pradesh this week against the backdrop of incursions by Chinese troops in recent times.

During the visit starting Saturday, the Army Chief is also scheduled to be briefed by the Eastern Army Commander Lt. Gen. MMS Rai about the progress on the raising of the 17 Mountain Strike Corps for guarding the eastern frontiers of the country, Army officials said here.

The Army chief is also likely to visit forward bases in Arunachal Pradesh, such as Tawang, during his visit to Arunachal Pradesh, which has seen several incidents of transgressions and incursions by the People's Liberation Army in the last few years.

His visit to Tawang will depend on the weather conditions prevailing there, they said.

Soon after taking over, Suhag had visited Ladakh region in Jammu and Kashmir which has been witnessing a spurt in incidents of transgressions and face-offs between Indian and Chinese troops in recent times.

The Army Chief had commanded the Eastern Command for two years before moving to the Army Headquarters as Vice Chief of Army Staff six months ago.
