India to resolve China border issue through talks: Meira

GENEVA (PTI): Maintaining that India's strategic and cooperative partnership with China has witnessed all-round progress in recent years, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Thursday said that New Delhi is committed to resolving the boundary question with Beijing through peaceful negotiations.

"India is committed to resolving the boundary question through peaceful negotiations and in a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable manner," she said during a meeting with Zha Peixin, Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People's Congress of China.

Kumar, who is leading a parliamentary delegation to Inter Parliamentary Union meeting, said that efforts to build trust and confidence between the militaries were proceeding satisfactorily.

Zha Pexin recalled that both sides have reiterated that pending the resolution of the boundary question, peace and tranquillity must be maintained in the border areas in the interest of both countries.

Admitting that there are still areas of differences between the two countries including the border issue, the Chinese leader emphasised that there should be more bilateral exchanges at the level of Parliamentarians to facilitate the process of dialogue, peace and cooperation.

Recalling the long tradition of cultural and historical ties between the two countries, Kumar said the two countries have continued to maintain a healthy momentum of high-level exchanges which included the visit of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to China twice last year.
