NEW DELHI (PTI): As a responsible maritime nation, it is obligatory for India to ensure peace and stability in its maritime neighbourhood, President Pranab Mukherjee said on Friday.
Extending greetings to all members of Indian Navy and their families on the occasion of Navy Day 2015, he said that the country's geostrategic location, extended coastline, economic pursuits and civilisational links make India a maritime nation whose prosperity, strategic independence and development are linked to the seas.
"The Indian Navy, as the primary instrument of India's sea power, has played a pivotal role in safeguarding India's maritime interests and promoting national prosperity. The Navy has also been our nation's ambassador of goodwill and friendship across the globe.
"As a responsible maritime nation, it becomes incumbent upon our country to ensure peace and stability in our maritime neighbourhood. It is a matter of great pride that the Indian Navy has discharged this responsibility with complete commitment, dedication and alacrity," Mukherjee said in his message.
He lauded the Navy for being at the forefront of promoting indigenisation and self-reliance.
"It has successfully ensured construction of many warships and submarines over the years. This would enable the Navy to maintain constant vigil, handle additional responsibilities and ensure that our national interests are protected.
"On the occasion of Navy Day, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all officers, sailors and civilian personnel of the Indian Navy and their families. I wish the Navy Day every success," the President added.
