IndiGo orders 300 Pratt & Whitney engines

The A320neo aircraft of Airbus.

NEW DELHI (PTI): Premier no-frill carrier IndiGo, which had last year placed the largest global order of 150 aircraft from Airbus, selected major US firm, Pratt and Whitney on Thursday, to provide 300 engines to power these planes.

This was also one of the largest single order for engines in aviation history. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp.

IndiGo has selected Pratt & Whitney's PurePower PW1100G engines to power its fleet of 150 new Airbus A320neo family of aircraft.

As each of the planes require two engines, the decision represents 300 firm PW1100G engines, with options for additional ones, a statement from the airline and the engine manufacturer said.

In addition, IndiGo also chose Pratt & Whitney to provide maintenance for these PurePower engines.

However, the value of the entire deal could not be immediately known.

IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh said the engine's benefits would "allow us to make dramatic improvements in environmental performance with reduced emissions and significant savings in fuel consumption" and extend the benefits to IndiGo customers.

"Our selection underscores the confidence in the P&W PurePower engine and is another important milestone in IndiGo's history," said Rahul Bhatia, Group Managing Director of InterGlobe Enterprises and Rakesh Gangwal, both founders of IndiGo.

"We are honoured IndiGo chose the PurePower engine - one of the largest engine orders in recent aviation history - for their new A320neo family fleet", Pratt & Whitney President David Hess said.
