Guided missile destroyer USS Dewey joins US Navy

CALIFORNIA (BNS): The US Navy has commissioned its newest guided missile destroyer USS Dewey (DDG 105) during a ceremony held at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach here last week.

USS Dewey is the 55th Arleigh Burke-class destroyer that will be deployed to conduct a variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management, to sea control and power projection.

The 9,200-ton warship has been designed to fight air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously. It has been equipped with an array of offensive and defensive weapons.

The warship has been built by US defence contractor Northrop Grumman. It has a length of 509 feet. Powered by four gas turbine engines, the ship can cruise at a speed of over 30 knots.
