TRIESTE, ITALY (BNS): Shipbuilder Fincantieri has handed over the last of the four U212A "Todaro" class conventional submarines to the Italian Navy on May 11.

The submarine, "Romeo Romei", was delivered at Fincantieri's shipyard of Muggiano (La Spezia). It is the last of the four U212A "Todaro" class twin units ordered by the Naval Armament Unit – NAVARM for the Italian Navy.

The other unit of the platform, "Pietro Venuti", was handed over in July 2016, the shipbuilder said.

All the platforms feature highly innovative technological solutions and are entirely built with amagnetic material, using the most modern silencing techniques to reduce its acoustic signature.
 
"Romei" has a surface displacement of 1,509 tonnes, an overall length of 55.9 meters, a maximum diameter of 7 meters, and can exceed 16 knots underwater. It has a 27-person crew.
 
The Italian Navy is already operating two U212A class of submarines – "Todaro" and "Scirè" – delivered by Fincantieri in 2006 and 2007.

All submarines of the class have been built as part of a programme launched in 1994 in cooperation with the German Submarine Consortium. While four units have been built for Italy, six platforms have been built for the German Navy under the project.
