BANGALORE (PTI): To deal with low intensity conflicts and to track down insurgents, India is developing a deep penetration radar. The airborne radar can locate objects hidden under foliage up to 30 km.

"It can locate any vehicle, a group of men hiding, any bunker," Director of Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) lab, S Varadarajan, told PTI here.

According to a top defence research official it would take 2-3 years to develop the radar. The weapons are meant only for usage in the borders.

Varadarajan is of the viewpoint that Army should place large number of orders for the weapon locating radar (WLR) as India has long borders.

He also added the Army is in the final phase of accepting for induction the WLR, which is developed by the Bangalore-based LRDE.

LRDE is also developing a 300-km range radar for aerial defence applications, he added.
