NEW DELHI (PTI): Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh is expected to discuss ways of strengthening military ties with the top military leadership of Myanmar during his five-day visit to the country which began on Oct 29.
His visit comes nearly 18 months after his predecessor Gen V K Singh went to Naypyidaw to forge stronger ties with the country which has had strong relations with China.
This visit by the Army Chief till November 2 assumes special significance in the light of enhanced defence cooperation between the two countries and the growing relationship between them.
During the visit, Gen Singh will be interacting with senior Myanmarese hierarchy including the President.
"His discussion with Myanmarese authorities will cover a wide range including security, regional issues, defence engagement, IT, development projects and efforts to enhance counter terrorism, counter insurgency efforts by both the countries. In addition, he will be visiting important training establishments of Myanmar," a statement said.
The friendship between Myanmar and India is based on common ideals and principles, arising from a significant legacy of historic links.
Military-to-military cooperation between the Myanmar and Indian Armed Forces encompasses exchange of visits, training, border liaison meetings, equipment cooperation, and attendance in various seminars, conferences and sports exchanges, the statement said.
