Naval Group inks contract to deliver four FDI frigates to Swedish Navy
France’s Naval Group has signed a contract with the Swedish Ministry of Defence for the procurement of four defence and intervention frigates (FDI) for the Royal Swedish Navy.
The contract was signed in Stockholm on Monday, August 31, 2026, in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Mikael Granholm, Director-General of the FMV (the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration), and Pierre Eric Pommellet, Chairman and CEO of Naval Group, signed the contract for the procurement of the four defence and intervention frigates (FDI) for the Royal Swedish Navy, less than four months after Sweden announced its selection of the FDI, Naval Group said in an official release.
With two units already delivered to the French and Hellenic navies and a tried-and-tested production line, FDI is thus able to meet Sweden’s requirements for rapid delivery, with the first delivery scheduled for 2030, the French shipbuilder said.
A state-of-the-art frigate, the FDI is combat-ready and boasts proven capabilities across all areas of warfare, notably with powerful anti-air capabilities based on the ASTER missile system.
The FDI is capable of countering current and emerging threats in demanding waters of the High North and in challenging environments such as the Baltic Sea or the North Atlantic, the statement added.
