The Viraat was completed and commissioned in 1959 as the Royal Navy's HMS Hermes, and transferred to India in 1987.
NEW DELHI (PTI): Britain Friday said it wanted to extend cooperation with India in the field of naval ship building.

"There is a considerable scope. There are common things like the way we build ships in the UK. The way we operate is common with the way India does. We do think that naval area is one where there are immense opportunities," British High Commissioner to India Richard Stagg told reporters here.

India and the UK have had a long Navy-to-Navy relationship as both the aircraft carriers which the Indian Navy has operated were earlier in service with the British Navy.

India, which has embarked on a major modernisation plan for its armed forces, has emerged as a favourite with various defence equipment-manufacturing countries with its plan of spending over USD 100 billion on defence in the next ten years.

If Britain wish to purchase ships from us, we can think about it.

I think is a very good opportunity for India to get the technology transfer from UK and built their own aircraft carrier and other ship which are capable of nuclear missile and torpedoes. As first of all India will be able to get the ships on time . 2.India can become a seller of new ships and submarines 3. That will also be costing around 30 % of the total if they have purchased it from another comapny. so "EK TEER 3 SHIKAR"

Indian navy's best bet for joint project would be Germany then Britain as for the real collaberation

I think Vv, that it will be in the form of building co-operation rather than us buying ships from you. Whilst we are very much not what we once were, we can, nontheless, still build our own ships. Both the Indian Navy and the Royal Navy could benefit from shared ideas, design and building.
